I ordered this product to help freshen up my closet a little. I don't have a major odor in there, just a slight smell of shoes and dirty laundry. However, I have had these bags hanging in the closet for a few weeks now and have noticed no change in the odor. It was a waste of money to buy these.

We added a 16 X 17 office to our home and were unable to attach ducts from our house furnace. Fortunately, our HVAC contractor told us about the LG unit. We had been thinking that we needed to install a small furnace-like device--along with ducts--to support the room. We live in Ohio so we needed both heating and cooling capabilities.
The unit was installed during January and the temps were in the 20's and 30's. We were at the "hanging drywall" stage. Each night we'd close the room and turn off the LG unit. The next morning the LG unit warmed the room in a matter of minutes. Outside noise was similar to a fan, not an air conditioner--much quieter. Inside fan noise was minimal, but the air flow was considerate.
The remote control is actually the thermostat and it controls heat/cooling, fan speed and temperature. Fan speed varies depending on how much difference there is between the current temp and the desired temp, but you can control the fan speed manually. There is even a "chaos" fan speed setting--it varies the speed and airflow direction constantly.
Installation is simple (you'll need an HVAC guy to charge the unit with refrigerant). Electrical requirements are 240V to the outside unit and 14-3 wire from the outside to the inside unit. The inside unit has a plastic drain pipe to the outside of the house. The inside unit is easy to clean and unobtrusive. It just hangs on the wall.
This is one of the best HVAC ideas I've ever seen. Were I building a new home, I'd use multiples of this box instead of a standard furnace & A/C combo.
It's my wife's office and she really likes the LG unit. It can't get any better!

The King Electrical King Electrical W2415 fan-forced wall heater is ideal for heating small rooms of for spot heating. Instead of using a bulky, unsightly space heater, simply install this unit directly into your wall. The W2415 gives you two wattage options, 750 and 1500, allowing you to heat up to 140 square feet. The unit saves valuable space, and it looks like the register from a standard central heating system. The heater's "Smart limit protection" shuts it off if it overheats. One-year warranty.--Josh Dettweiler
What's in the BoxHeater (standard color bright white)

Five Tips for Buying a HeaterChoosing a space heater is a matter of sifting through a bewildering array of types, power ratings, and fuel sources. Let's break it down a little to make the process easier.

What are the different types of space heaters?
Radiant heaters emit infrared radiation that directly warms the objects in front of the heaters (rather than the surrounding air). If you only need heat by a desk or in a small section of a room, a radiant heater is quiet and will use very little power.
Forced-air heaters use a fan to blow air that has been warmed by metal or ceramic heating elements. A forced-air heater is appropriate for quickly heating up a small- to medium-sized room, but can be noisy.
Convection heaters draw cold air from the floor; the air is warmed by heating coils and emitted from the top of the heater. A convection heater is appropriate for quickly heating up a small- to medium-sized room, but also can be noisy.
Radiators work by heating oil enclosed in a reservoir, gradually heating the surrounding air. If heating speed isn't an issue, you might want to opt for a radiator. These are extremely quiet and effective--perfect for bedrooms.

Should I buy an electric or a combustion model? If you want a heater that will be available in emergencies, or that can heat areas larger than a single room, choose a "combustion" model--one that is powered by a gas or fuel like propane, kerosene, natural gas, or diesel. Which fuel type you choose depends largely on convenience and local availability. For example, diesel would be appropriate for a heater you take with you on long car trips.

How powerful a heater do I need?Heaters are rated by BTU, which stands for British Thermal Unit (the amount of heat needed to heat one pound of water by 1 degree F). To find out how many BTU you need:
Calculate the volume of the space to be heated by multiplying square footage by height.
Multiply that number by 4 if your insulation is poor, 3 if it's average, or 2 if it's good.
The resulting number is a ballpark figure for how many BTU you'll need.
Do space heaters cost a lot to operate? As a general rule, electric space heaters are more expensive to use than combustion models. To ensure energy efficiency, a thermostat is a must-have feature for any heater. For radiant heaters, models with a 360 degree heating surface can heat larger spaces. If you need a forced-air heater, models with ceramic elements tend to be more efficient.

Are space heaters a fire hazard?Space heaters are implicated in about 25,000 residential fires every year. To ensure proper safety, always follow the manufacturer's usage instructions and fill out the warranty card to receive informational updates from the manufacturer. Also, look for extra safety features such as an automatic shutoff switch that can shut down the unit if, for example, it gets upended. In addition, choose a model where the heating element is adequately enclosed within the unit.

SS08M10%2DKuhl Series 7900 BTU Window Air Conditioner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Friedrich SS08M10 -- 7900 BTU window air conditioner
This is my second Kuhl. I purchased the original one from M&M Appliances in Washington, DC, but took it back because it was damaged - compressor ripped from the mounts and refrigerant lines bent - and the backup battery was dead on arrival. Second unit seems to be in much better condition. It was not damaged and the backup battery is not dead. Friedrich also mailed me a new backup battery (see their website for the form to fill out for a free battery).
Installation was a bit time consuming and required more tools than you'd expect for a window a/c install. The hardware that comes with the unit is excellent. It is sturdy and well built. Installation is definitely intended to be semi-permanent. I will not be removing this unit every winter like I have with previous window units.
Unit cools very well and is very quiet when compared to bargain brands at many stores. Discharge air temperature with R410a seems to be lower than most previous air conditioners that use R22. Depending on temperature and humidity in the room, the unit will sometimes blow visible fog from the vents.
This air conditioner is very well built. Sound dampening could have been increased - the unit makes a bit more noise than I'd like for the premium price tag. Friedrich should consider insulating the compressor in order to keep noise down. Compressor makes an oscillating sound at a frequency of about 2 - 3 hertz. Fan noise is minimal, which I attribute to the large vent design. The most irritating sound is the water splashing on the condenser fan. This problem could be solved by more sound insulation or by a condensate drain (although I understand that the condensate splashing on the condenser increases efficiency). Still -- VERY QUIET when compared to most alternatives.
All features work well except for the auto fan mode (energy saver), which cycles the fan too frequently to "test the air temperature." I leave it set for continuous mode, which I prefer anyway. I do have a gripe about the remote control - it doesn't sync with the unit's control panel, so if you make a change on the unit and then go to the remote, the remote still has its previous settings. Would be nice if the remote was RF instead of IR so that it didn't have to be pointed at the unit and it could auto-sync whenever settings are changed at the unit.
If you buy one of these, definitely read the instructions. Some parts of the install are not intuitive, and there are many features that you'll want to familiarize yourself with.
Some people have complained that the unit does not display the accurate temperature. This can be adjusted under the *temperature offset (TO)* section of the menu, along with a number of other settings.
I hope to get many years of trouble free use out of this unit.
PROS:
Sleek design with optional front cover colors
7 day scheduler
Fresh air & exhaust air control
Digital display
5 temperature sensors to monitor unit performance and temperature (Supply Temp, Return Temp (room temp), Outside Temp, Evap Coil Temp, Cond Coil Temp)
Remote Control with digital display
Very quiet
Well built
Made in the USA
Good warranty
Excellent air filter
Great customer service
11.7 SEER, great efficiency for a window unit
CONS:
Long install time (2 - 3 hours)
Large overall size
Damaged during shipping, glad I bought from a store instead of online!
Expensive (I hope I end up getting what I paid for)

**UPDATE** I have now provided an update below to my "first take" review...
**UPDATE 2011** see bottom of this initial review...
I just had a Friedrich Kuhl SS12M10 installed in my NYC co-op apartment. Since it is a brand new install, this is my "first take" or "very preliminary" review which I may update in the future. I hope you find it helpful.
My apartment is a 7th floor 500sq/ft co-op in Manhattan. I had a Kenmore 10,000 BTU window unit (75010) which worked great but was not programmable, and on 95 degree+ days, didn't seem to have enough 'oomph' to cool the 500 sq/ft adequately. So I opted to get a bigger unit, 12,000 BTU, which is programmable. Hence, I settled on the Friedrich Kuhl SS12M10.
Because I live in a co-op, we are not allowed to install our own window units for liability reasons (i.e., dropping onto the sidewalk below). Hence I had an HVAC contractor deliver and "install" (cough) a new SS12M10 unit. Suffice it to say, it was quite an ordeal as the contractor was extremely disorganized/forgetful etc. The 2 people he sent to install it were two 20-somethings with little more than a sawzall and duct tape for a "custom framed install" (which cost me $600). What a joke. And they showed up 5 hours late just as a bonus. But the 1-star contractor has nothing to do with the unit/Friedrich. I just miss the days when people knew what they were doing (i.e., a quality job) and didn't do a half assed job for twice the money. Anyway...
Of note is that almost all of the new Kuhl's the contractor has been receiving have been damaged or have a defective control panel backup battery (CR2450). He finally found one unit that wasn't damaged (dented/cracked, etc.) but that had a bad battery. I accepted that unit for the install.
n
After the "custom framed installation" (another big hacking cough) I got to see how the unit performed (it was 92 degrees out). By this point, my apartment was up to 85.5 degrees inside.
First, I had to go to radio shack and get a new CR2450 backup battery, which was easy enough to install. I started up the unit, and frankly, was not overwhelmed with its performance. Rather the opposite; the new refrigerant certainly doesn't seem to push out air as cold as my 5-year old R-22 Kenmore unit. Also, even on high setting, the fan doesnt really push out a lot of air or "throw" it very far into the room (2-3 feet on high setting). Accordingly, whereas my Kenmore 10,000 unit would cool my apartment from 85 to 78 in about 45 minutes on medium, yesterday it took the Kuhl 12,000 BTU unit a full 3-4 hours on max setting. Very disappointing - but as a `high efficiency' unit, perhaps not shocking.
The programmable timer is nice, although I have noted two things. First, what the unit thinks is 78 degrees is really 80/81 degrees per the digital thermometer I own and have used for years. Second, in full "auto" mode (i.e., the unit selects fan speed), the fan never goes higher than two-bars, "medium" (out of low, med, high, and max). Thus, due to the temperature sway, if the unit shuts off after (finally) reaching 78 degrees, and the apartment quickly goes back up to 81 - the unit turns on again but with the fan only on low or medium, and thus it takes a good 45-60 minutes to get back down to 78.
I will say, on the plus side, the unit appears to be quite good at removing humidity from the room.
In terms of noise production it seems to be the same as, or a bit louder, than my Kenmore 75010. I would say it is typical window unit with fan noise + compressor noise when running. However, for a 'premium' unit, it would have been nice if Friedrich had 'rubberized' the top outside of the case so that you don't have to hear the constant PLECK PLECK PLECK PLECK of water dripping onto it from the dozens of window units in apartments on the 13 floors above me. It's odd how their promotional materials emphasize their dedication to noise reduction efforts - yet they missed one of the major sources of noise - water (unit drips or rain) hitting the top outside of the case. Clearly, none of these people have lived in a multi-floor complex below others' a/c units and experienced the constant (rain or shine) noise of water dripping onto a metal case.
I pulled the filter just to learn how. It is a bit of a hassle, and if you get this unit, be sure to read the instructions on how to do it since it is not intuitive (or particularly easy) compared to my Kenmore (I think I miss it already :( ).
SUMMARY: Overall, I am rather under impressed and probably should have saved the 1600$ and stayed with the unit I had that worked relatively well except on the super hot days. I really like the programmable feature of the Kuhl, but at least preliminarily, have found that this 12k unit performs seemingly not as well as my 2005 10k,000 BTU Kenmore 75010. The Kuhl doesn't push out air nearly (!) as forcefully as the Kenmore did, does not throw the air very far (NB: the top left grill puts out 2-3x more air than the top right grill), and the air is not nearly as cool coming out (probably due to the R-410A refrigerant). The unit takes a LONG time (a few hours) to cool down a 500 sq/ft space (which is actually less space since I keep my closet, bathroom, and kitchen doors closed, making it about 350-375 sq/ft). The unit produces typical window a/c noise, but for the price, could have been rubberized on the top outside to reduce water drippage sounds (I put two layers of rubber drawer lining on the outside to eliminate this noise). Finally, I found it VERY annoying to have a brand new $1,000 unit delivered but have to go out, buy, and install a $3 backup battery (the CR2450).
This review has been a bit wordy, but there do not seem to be many reviews about the Friedrich Kuhl series a/c's online. I may update this going forward if my opinion changes.
**UPDATE....
It is now about 5 weeks since my Kuhl SS12M10 install. It has been a very hot few weeks here in NYC, and I have a few modified impressions as set forth below:
Cooling: Initially, the unit didnt seem to cool my 500 sq/ft very well. However, it seems that the unit needed a little 'break in' period. I have found that it is now cooling the area quite well now, and in terms of cooling capacity, I am very pleased. My a/c bill also dropped significantly even in view of the 2nd hottest month on record in NYC. More cooling, less cost, thats good.
Auto-thermostat: Freidrich needs to tweak this a bit. In auto mode, once the room reaches the set temp, the fan turns on/off approximately every 30 seconds seemingly to 'test' the room temperature. The constant fan on/off every 30 seconds or so gets extremely annoying esp. when trying to sleep. It is best just to leave fan on "continuous" rather than "auto."
Noise: This is my biggest disappointment with this unit. And here is why - the unit (fan + compressor) is NOT noticeably louder than comparable a/c's. However, it is the KIND of noise that it makes. My previous Kenmore window unit, and almost all Friedrich units I have heard, make the fan noise + a constant "drone" when the compressor is running. However, my new Kuhl unit, when the compressor is running, makes a very rhythmical (and highly annoying) sound - like this: UuuWHAaaa-UuuWHAaaa-UuuWHAaaa-UuuWHAaaa-UuuWHAaaa-UuuWHAaaa (with about 2-3 'UuuWHAaaas' per second). In other words, the compressor doesnt make a constant sound, it makes this 'churning' up-down sound which is hard to sleep through, and hard to watch TV with it in the background. Whereas other a/c's constant drone fades into the background, the heavy and deep rhythym of this unit is ever present. Friedrich *REALLY* needs to work on this.
Final Analysis: before buying this or any other Kuhl unit, I recommend letting Friedrich work on it for another year or two. Their other units (in all of our work office windows) run supremely. The Kuhl series seems to have been kicked out of the nest a little prematurely. I regret not getting the prior Freidrich 12k type even though it doesnt look as nice. I would love it if Friedrich would take my ($1650) Kuhl unit back for lab testing, and comp me the prior model!
I maintain a 2-3 star rating.
**UPDATE 2011...
Read the thread responses to this review, where I added a revised assessment after firing up the unit last week. My rating drops to one star.

First thermostat/remote purchase. Using it on a Martin fireplace with great results. Difficulty of installation of 5 if 1-10, just b/c I had to do some minor mods to install the off/on/remote component on the wall and 2 feet of supplied wire didn't suffice. Very easy to operate, and didn't mind that the thermostat is programmed to activate when it is 2 degrees below your set temp and shuts off the flame 2 degrees above the set temp. So if you set it at 71 deg, it will turn on at 68 deg and off at 73 deg. Haven't had the need to use the remote from the lazyboy yet, works just fine setting it while mounted to the wall and walking away. With evening temps at 38-45 deg the fireplace comes on about 3 times for mayb 20 min intervals and then shuts off. It is usually turned on at 6pm and shut off at 10pm. Had the thermostat for 3 months now and very satisfied.

Urban Compost Tumbler 9.5 Cubic Foot Review

Urban Compost Tumbler 9.5 Cubic Foot
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased two Urban Compost Tumblers (UCT-9) a year ago (12/06) for my wife for Christmas, and despite high hopes, I'm sad to say that I'm disappointed. We've tried over and over to get the tumblers to compost well, but despite a year of effort, have not gotten an honestly good batch yet.
We are determined composters, and have for years kept large piles into which we put an endless stream of vegetable scraps, leaves, dried cow manure, yard clippings and all sorts of other such material that, if turned occassionally with a pitch fork and moistened well during the process, has made us wonderful compost. Note that we also first run most of the material through a chipper-shredder to grind it into a finer mix. We live in Central Texas, and therefore can compost year-round due to our usually warm temperatures (our tumblers, as with our piles, are in full sun). On average, I'd say that it takes us about 3 months to turn a simple pile sitting on on the ground into rich, dark, fully broken-down compost.
I had hopes that a compost tumbler could speed the process and make the effort easier. Despite the notable lack to detailed testamonies based upon actual use by real consumers (beware of rave/fake reviews by company employees!), I decided to take a chance on the UTC-9. I had hopes that it's tumbling action would simplify the process of turning the compost and make it easy to keep the material inside moist and loose, and that its construction would stand up to the Texas sun.
Our tumblers arrived loosely packed in a large box, and were simple to assemble. The UCT-9 is indeed sturdy and will seemingly last forever, but is quite heavy. It is truly heavy when loaded with material, and quickly becomes very difficult to turn. Our experience is that if it is filled to more than 1/3 full (which isn't very much!), turning it becomes nearly impossible (it becomes a very very heavy pendulum). When you add a bit of water (compost won't happen without it), it becomes even more unmanageable.
Another problem is that if you add any significant amount of fresh green material, and not even any additional water, the material gums up in the bottom and turns into a huge slime ball and smells horrible. Yes, it is clear that if you add less green stuff and more brown stuff, you'll have less of this problem, but we want to compost them both, and trying to find the perfect not-too-slimy, and not-too-dry, mix is difficult or impossible.
Of all the loads we've tried (green, brown, and both), none has truly composted. All have either resulted in either a slime ball or a dry pile of chunks that haven't broken down. We even have let recent loads go for half the year, but with no real success no matter what we put in, or what the mix has been. And yes, we have followed the instructions closely, but to no avail.
A few other disappointments:
1. The unit is round, and it's lid is round, which are fine. However, during the course of the year, both of our units have slightly warped out-of-round, meaning that if the lid is removed, it is extremely difficult to get back on (requires a frustrating effort of trying to squeeze the unit into round while simultaneously trying to force the lid back on). If the unit is loaded, getting the lid back on is now nearly impossible.
2. The unit is very difficult to empty. If you turn if over, it dumps onto the ground beneath itself, which is nealy useless because it is too heavy to easily move away. We're forced to dump it beneath it and then shove the unit over and away to get to the material. If, alternatively, you try to reach in and scoop out the material, you experience a frustrating and difficult effort due to the nature of the cramped barrel shape, as well as the interior cross supports that are very much in the way.
In the end, I'd have to admit that the UCT-9 was an expensive experiment and failure for us. More broadly, I'd have to say that I can't see how any other compost tumbler would be any different because, by their very nature, they're all just closed bins into which you place stuff to break down. Therefore, if this one didn't work, I can't see how any other would work either. Instead, we'll continue to simply pile material on the ground and turn it occasionally with a pitch fork -- a process that never creates slime balls, never smells, is easy to load and unload, always fully breaks down, and never fails to create that rich, dark, moist compost that makes our garden sing.

Liking all things English, this clock could not help but please! There are two things that buyers may want to be aware of. First, it does not come with screws or batteries so you'll need to have some on hand. Most of us have extras as I did. Second, as the clock does not detach from the bracket, the placement of the two holes for attaching it to the wall made it impossible to use an electric drill (and get the screws in straight) and almost impossible to use a had screwdriver.

iRobot Roomba 530 Vacuum Cleaning Robot - Model# 72-94530 Review

iRobot Roomba 530 Vacuum Cleaning Robot - Model# 72-94530
Average Reviews:

The Roomba is fun. The 530 model doesn't use half of the owner's manual stuff (no special "lighthouses" to get it to do multiple rooms in series, no remote control, no scheduling function so it works while you are away), but it does clean. It can get out of any area it can get into unless it did it by moving shoes and jammed them up. Mine didn't get caught under the dining room table, but it spent a long time there hunting and pecking. It moved some slip on sandals to get under and then as it kept trying to get out they kept sliding in the way, but it eventually kept nudging them until it could get out.
It went under the cabinet where I store my flip flops to clean and ended up pushing them all over the room in different direction.
Don't sweat when it doesn't pick up "big stuff" like sweetener packets, the actual vacuuming area is smaller than the robot, so stuff gets nudged until it rides right over it in its pathing. (Does dropping stuff in front of the robot to make it clean more count as abusive harassment? :lol)
The wall/corner side brush does work well to pick up the junk along baseboards and corners, it also feeds it directly into the pickup area (it is the off side that has a problem with shoving small debris out of the way).
It can end up leaving little piles of debris if you let it range over a large area, the pathing algorithm would end up getting it, but when it moves out of the kitchen into the hall, gets excited about the front door rug, tries out the way to the kid's room, gets excited again about the front door run, then trundles back into the living room area, then finds the hall to the computer room and the computer room itself, it just doesn't make the full sweep.
It follow odd shapes it considers "wall" very well. It looks like it is missing bits, but the side sweeper brush is hitting the tight corner areas.
When you first start cleaning with it, unless you have just done a spring cleaning type of thing, check the debris box often, it isn't that big.
Open the debris box over the trash can and fiddle with the emptying, dirt/dust can hang by the filter tray hinge and dribble. Mainly empty away from the hinge while holding it sideways.
We have a Rainbow and it seriously would kick this little bugger's arse any day of the week for cleaning, but it is a lot bigger pain to set up to hit the high traffic areas only. This looks like it will be great for day to day maintenance of picking up hair. I'd have said pet hair (which was the first thing I noticed from both my long hair dogs), but after it worked the little corners around my computer chair and desk, I noticed that the majority of the hair was mine. I had picked up and stacked some of the various boxes of supplies, equipment and parts out of the way, so it had more access to areas that haven't been vacuumed in a while.
Not enough data, but it seems to have an issue where a wall to wall carpet meets a tile area. The little lip edging isn't enough to stop it, which means it doesn't sit and dig right there where dirt accumulates. It did quite a bit, but it was spending time with one wheel on the carpet and one on the tile and never could bring the side brush into play. That is a coding issue, but it probably would take more expensive discrimination circuits.
Another issue is that it can manage to get stuck under furniture that is just the "right" height if it hits it wrong. Did that under one of the wingback chairs, it turned under it where the bumper sensor wasn't, picked it up enough to jam itself.
If let it roam too widely, then when it loses charge it cannot find its docking station. Easy enough fix, I pick it up and take it where I want it to work and let it go, then check back on it and return it to the dock if it needs a charge.
Looks like it needs regular maintenance to keep it cleaning well. No big deal, everything pops out, cleans easily (need good pointy scissors to clear wrapped up hair) and goes right back together. I'd say at least after every second cleaning cycle when you first start up with it. Tip: the big wheels on the end of the big roller brush pop off so you can slide the brush cleaner thingy right over the roller after you have cut and pulled all the stuff wrapped around it off.
It is light enough to pick up and walk around with, so it looks like it is easy enough to just pick up the obstacles in a room, but it in there, shut the door and let it go when you leave the house. If you put the docking station in with it, you should get back to find it charged and ready for the next room that evening. I'll test that. Then just cycle it around the house doing a room or three every day and you should be good.
Overall a great little widget to keep the general level of dirt/hair/debris down between heavier duty cleanings. Bonus to that should be easier "heavy" cleanings without you having to do anything but move it and hit a button.

SPT Portable Air Conditioner, 7500 BTUs, WA-7500M Review

In comparison, my 500W window AC runs cooler, but this 620W portable is so much more convenient. In my area, we need an AC only for few days a year; it was a pain to mount/unmount the window AC in summer/winter. So this one is perfect here, just plug it to the power and window and we have a good night of sleep.
It uses only 620W (300W less energy consumption than other portable ACs in this class), so we set it to the lowest temperature and let it cool continuously. The noise level is acceptable; we place it on upstairs and can barely hear it downstairs. Ran it for 24 hours and no need to drain water. In case the light says the tank is full, don't drain the water too much as the water tank is used to cool down the machine for better efficiency. I also cover the hot hose with thick cloth.
During a heat wave, we start it in the morning with all windows closed and it keeps our house to 87F while the outside is 105F. Without this AC, temperature would be 91F even at downstairs, too high to stay with and upstairs would be simply baking. 87F is OK, especially for a day or two only. After the sun goes down, we still leave it on but open all the windows. This helps hugely on a heat wave in a otherwise cool area like Oregon vally. Hard to live without it. However, I think it is useless in a hot area like Texas.
The window mounting kit was missing, called SPT and a gentaman told me it would arrive in 3-5 days. What a customer support! While I'm waiting for the kit, I simply cut a hole on a small flat box and it works like a charm.
Unless your wife is a neat freak who asks you to unmount a window AC every winter, then don't buy a portable AC. The latter is significantly less cool than the former. But if you're as lucky as me and your area is not hot enough to worth a central AC, then you'd better get this.
